Maha Mantra
7 of us from the local temple in Portland, Oregon went downtown today to perform HARI NAM. Hari Nam is the public chanting of the holy names of the Lord. It was beautiful out, but COLD. We spent 1 1/2 hours chanting to music, and talking with the public. It was a lot of fun. We chant the MAHA MANTRA, which is:
HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE
HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE
HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE
HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE

Re: Maha Mantra
oooh I love this!
The Hare Krishna.
I would have liked to join in.
I didn't know what the words meant.
It is the repetitive chant I like.
Sounds like a lovely day you had

Re: Maha Mantra
The Maha Mantra are the holy names of the Lord. Actually, the Lord has millions of names, and one can chant any name of God.
Under the Hinduism Forum I posted information on GAURA PURNIM. Over 500 years ago, the Lord incarnated as Sri Caitanya. He incarnated as His Own Devotee. He's called the Golden Incarnation. He instructed us to chant the holy names of the Lord, as the easiest and quickest way of getting out of the material manifestation.
Hare is the female energy of the Lord; the loving, devotional Personal energy of the Lord. Krishna is a Personal name for God, and means All Attractive. Rama is also a Personal name for God.
So, when you chant the Maha Mantra, you are literally calling upon the Lord, and He hears you.
The Vedic Scriptures are full of instruction on how to get out of the material world, and into the Spiritual world. But, in this day and age, it's impossible to keep all of the Vedic injunctions (sacrifices, ect.). So, the Lord incarnated and gave us a simple sacrifice that covers all sacrifices: the chanting of His holy names.
And Mia, it's never too late to learn about this!

Re: Maha Mantra
Hi Joan,
Yes, it's a prayer. It's calling upon God. It's a form of crying out to Him. And He does hear.
