The Price of Children

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition. But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into:

· $8,896.66 a year,
· $741.3 month, or * $171.08 a week.
· That's a mere $24.24 a day!
· Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice is don't have children if you want to be "rich." Actually, it is just the opposite.

What do you get for your $160,140?

Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
Glimpses of God every day.
Giggles under the covers every night.
More love than your heart can hold.
Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites
Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how bad traffic to work was.For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to:

finger-paint,
carve pumpkins,
play hide-and-seek,
catch lightning bugs, and
never stop believing in Santa Claus. You have an excuse to:
keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,
watching Saturday morning cartoons,
going to Disney movies, and
wishing on stars.
You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day.
For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for:

retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,
taking the training wheels off a bike,
removing a splinter,
filling a wading pool,
coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.
You get a front row seat to history to witness the:

· first step,
· first word,
· first bra,
· first date, and
· first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great grandchildren. You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.

In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God. You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits.

So . . one day they will like you, love without counting the cost. That is quite a deal for the price!!!!!!!

Love & enjoy your children & grandchildren!!!!!!!

Tell us about yourself : I’m a widow; I lost my spouse April 16, 1999 to a broken heart and Cancer. He was a Native American. I have lived on his Reservation in California for 37 years. We were married 23 years. We had two children, lost one to a drunk driver in 97 before my spouse died. I started my spiritual journey when son passed; but woke up to spirituality abruptly June 2009 when I had an event reading by James Van Praagh and he brought through eight deceased relatives. I would love to be a medium in the future, and share that spiritual connection with those who have lost. I take photos of spirits in clouds. Got to tell you a little story.... Very Happy

I have two children now grown up and have children of their own.

I am happy I raised two kids to be polite and kind to others. But through the years they have had their problems.
Marriages splitting up and so on. At times I thought to myself....They get worse as they get older.

Last year I received a birthday card saying with two small children on it,the small girl is sitting in a wheel barrow, long blonde ringlets and blue eyes,an little angel. Next to her is a little boy dressed in shorts and T-shirt standing beside the wheelbarrow.
Same angelic smile on his face.
I read inside the card......The words were.....

' Didn't know, did you that we would grow up to a couple of ****** did you?'
it came from my son with a loving message underneath saying....'Love you.Mum so much!'

I have kept that card and still laugh when I read it.

I would pay anything to keep my children as they are and their kindness to me as I grow older.

Loves

Joan xx

I live your post Wind - Dancer.
It is all so true xxx

Like you Joan, my children have all had problems as they got older.
Two overdosed, one on paracetemol, he was going to be left to die, cos we got him to hospital too late (12 hours is the time between overdosing and treatment) however he vomited, so they treated him.
The other son locked himself in his flat, took sleeping tablets, but woke up and was ok.

Two have failed marriages, daughter has an underactive thyroid, almost died cos the doctor didn't suspect a 14yr old to have it.

One son is now disabled.

Now the grand kids are growing up ..... and it starts all over again lol

The moral of that story is. Kids might be expensive but they are worth it! I think that prognosis is way off for the US! College alone would cost $160,000!

We do what we do because we want our children to have the best backgroud so they can do the same for theirs, but don't forget we are all here to learn lessons while this is going on so if some fail on the way up it was probably suppose to happen to make someone else stronger.
I'm sorry Mia that your family has had so much sorrow in this lifetime let's hope your grandchildren will not experience any of this maybe the lessons ended with the parents. I'm sure your children are stronger people today because of what they experienced. It obviously wasn't their time to pass then they were given another chance! Loving Hugs

They have had their bad moments through life but I always tell them they know where I live and my phone number.
I never try to interfere in their lives but sometimes I do get angry at the fool hardy ways youth lives these days.
But then can we blame them? The ways of today are so different from ways of yesteryear.

Well, my two children.......

Bless them each for living their life their way.
With my son, if I'd known he was going to leave this world when he did I would have changed a few things. But now I know it played out exactly as it should have.

Daughter..... I have no regrets with her. She's a Libra, stubborn as all _____. Got pregnant at 18 when I was in college right after son was killed. Her dad died before her son was born...and my husband saw the spirit of his grandchild sitting next to him on the couch. Her dad died in April, grandson born in July.....and she almost gave him up her son......and I left that decision up to her even though I was falling apart inside....I wanted her to make that decision. She made it right and we have an amazing 13 year old. I think holding back my emotions and opinion was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life......my stomach was just screaming. But I did it, she did it perfectly and I love her for that.

She's never done drugs, has worked since she was 15, took a college course in Business Administration for AA and Bachelors, could not get a job with this degree whatsoever.....(98 applications out there) Obviously spirit wanted her home to take care of this new baby girl. Her new husband is working with the railroad 5 days a week and he goes to college for GIS (Global Information Systems - mapping) training 3x a week.

They live rent free in my double wide....so they have no reason to complain;)

She is living her path her way and.
She supports her son 110% in everything that he does with school sports and his musical career.

I'm extreamly proud of her....and she can cook!

I was told by a medium once that her son came into her life to show her PEACE within herself.

If I knew "then" what I know "now" I would have let my kids be themselves, break things, make mistakes, etc.etc.etc.

THAT'S WHY WE LOVE OUR GRANDCHILDREN SOOOOOO MUCH....
