What is ego?
I read a lot of information on ego and it’s all different. There are many opinions out there and I think I finally found one closer to the truth but I can be wrong. What do you think?
Here it is: Everything you learned from experiences with your parents, peers, teachers, doctors and so forth are a continuing determinant of your behavior. The best way to define ego, is "What you think you are."
You created your ego to protect you from experiencing unpleasant circumstances. Of far greater importance to your belief system is not whether you have big feet, but how the world treats people with big feet. The beliefs you have about people with big feet and how having big feet affects your life are the deep-seated beliefs that your ego remembers and plays that tape every time something comes up about the size of feet--yours or anyone else's.
This system of beliefs is what we call your ego. You ego is not the reality of what you are, but everything you have come to believe is true about you.
What you believe is not TRUTH. If it were, it would remain constant and would be the same for everyone.
You made it up, and it changes every moment of every day, so it is an illusion
Because you made it, you LOVE it, and must defend it at all costs
Think about a new idea you have and want to share. Notice how hurt you become if the world scoffs at your idea. You thought it up, and it may or may not be true, but you think it is and so you have to defend it. You have thousands of beliefs, and some of them contradict others, which explains your confusion and mixed feelings about something. It divides your efforts and effectiveness and in the extreme will immobilize you. You have accepted deeply ingrained beliefs which control your life.
Your ego's sole function is to help you by guiding you, to prove that you are right, and that what you believe is really true. It has such power to create experiences to provide proof that what you believe is true. Think about the belief that an abused child has of not being enough. His life experiences will prove to him that he is not good enough. Or the child who is taught that she is shy. Her ego will provide the instant reaction to "prove" to her that she is unable to speak fluently to visitors or classmates.
Your ego is not the bad guy, it is simply a collection of your beliefs. It is a guidance system. It will provide an instant reaction to everything that happens. Though it has unlimited power over your reactions, its options are limited and locked into only what fits with your deep-seated beliefs. You will never be without an ego, you can never transcend it, only transform it.
As you change what you believe to be true, your ego will provide new guidance for new instant reactions and thus new experiences to support your new beliefs. The Law of Attraction manifests the things that you believe to be true. By changing your beliefs, you can change your reality.

Re: What is ego?
I feel this is a great explanation of the Ego, it really does make sense that the ego is controlled by the beliefs we have, for instance i tend to have lustful thoughts, at times people have told me that it is okay you are human, and the part about me being human is true but through interactions with many people throughout my life i have come to take on many of these beliefs as my own, it is an automatic reaction that if i think lustfully it is bad, this brings self pity as i become ashamed of my thoughts or my actions. It is the same with any negative emotion that i deal with in my life. Thoughts lead to actions.
This is something i am beginning to understand and am still in the process of working out the kinks, if i have a thought that i know is an ego instead of getting upset and letting self pity set in, i will try to move on from this thought or action and Love myself reguardless. I am taking a course on Astral Travel and Dreams and Awareness throughout the day is one of the key components to having clear dreams and astral experiences. It is work that will begin to help understand the egos and what they are. I am hoping to share some of my experiences through what i am learning through the course.
The ego is something many people have tried to abolish from the psyche, the subconscious thinks many thoughts throughout the day, as of late i have been working on clearing the subconscious mind of any untruths or negative thoughts, this is a work in progress, i find so much of what i believe is from all the people you have mentioned above, i mean when we are young we believe everything our parents tell us and society as a whole and begin to buy into these thoughts and ideas whether they are helpful or hurtful for us, we take them upon ourselves innocently, but what would Self Discovery be if this did not happen the beauty is shedding the old self and becoming new again.
Wouldn't it be great to see the world as you once did in the eyes of the child you once were?
Was everything new and amazing?
This is a great topic and one i am sure i will be sharing more in.
Many Blessings

Re: What is ego?
.Stop being self-centered, rather be centered in the Self.
The ego started from that fine current at the superconscious level, and as it
became more and more gross it became more and more individualized, and that
is what we call the human responsibility—that is what we call the human ego. Man
does not possess an ego, he is the ego.
When we get immersed in this ego, we become self-centered and start believing
that the whole world revolves around us. We believe that we are the center of
the universe and everyone must pay attention to us
When a person says that he needs no outside assistance, it is not the true Self that says it, but
the ego-self. The ego self assumes a self-importance that, “I am it all, and nothing is greater
than me,” and when the ego self thinks that it is self-sufficient, then no progress is ever made.

Re: What is ego?
Whatever you believe the ego to be, and for the most part, it is perceived as a negative and destructive part of ourselves.Unfortunately, people often aren't aware of how much the ego controls their lives. From relationship issues to government and military decisions the ego can create havoc and does. Its terra firma is fear and negativity. The last thing it wants us to be is vulnerable and if we can't be vulnerable we lose. If you've ever had a confrontation with a loved one and stood your ground, believing you were absolutely sure that you were right and then watched that loved one walk out of your life you know what price you pay for invulnerability.
We all have different perspectives of the ego - for some it is pride, or an inflated sense of self-esteem. For others it is the embodiment of evil. The fact is that we are all affected by it and if we want to access our higher good we have to learn how to control it and how to balance it in our lives. We have to recognize when it is there and not try to hide it. I like to think of the ego as energy, just as money is energy. This energy can be used to create or destroy depending on the intention. If we aspire to be moral, ethical, loving and enlightened beings, and if the behavior effected by the ego is seemingly contrary to these traits, then the ego appears to be inherently bad or evil. At a higher level, though, the ego provides us opportunity to experience all things contrary to love. The problem is that very few people are objective enough, especially while they are going through a difficult experience, to realize this and be thankful for the opportunity that the ego has provided them. Instead, they focus on the negative feelings, emotions and ultimately, the undesired outcome. If we remember the Creator's greatest gift is free will then the degree to which we embrace our ego-driven behavior is the true key to the effect the ego has on our lives. Many times I have had the opportunityto meet my Ego I was able to briefly sense its presence as a separate part of myself. At first I believed all the distractions it brought my way. I found myself asking the teacher if we could have a good long talk and then I wanted to go outside and take in a breath of fresh air; I focused on the other people in the room and noted their taste in clothing! This went on for a while before I finally settled down quietly and had a thought. There was something deep inside that I was trying to avoid. (Don't laugh, healers avoid things, too.) So who was the avoider since, at least part of me spent good money to do this journey and really wanted to know what was hiding inside. Another thought came - that jokester who has been telling me I needed a walk and commenting on everything just might be my ego. Third thought, and this from my Higher Self: Thank the ego for a job well done then ask it to move aside. I did exactly that. In a brief moment my ego released its hold on me and I became vulnerable enough to experience a deeply felt guilt that needed healing.
As the healer-observer in that situation I marveled at the power available to all of us to control the hold that the ego has on us. As the "healee", no longer under the ego's control, I was able to receive blessings and strength to mend a part of myself that caused untold problems in my life.
Since that enlightening moment I have had other practice sessions with my ego and remembered (after a some struggle) that I had the power to ask my ego to take a hike. I repeated the gratitude I felt for it for helping me survive and asked it to move away so that I could gain more insight. Again, in a split second I felt the release and saw myself and all creation more clearly.

Re: What is ego?
I must admit humbly that i can be very egotistic at times, there is something amazing that i read that i would very much like to share with all of you.
Fascination is the reason for the deep sleep in which humanity lives
People are fascinated with all the things of life. People forget themselves because they are fascinated. The drunk in the bar is fascinated with alcohol, the place, pleasure, friends and women. The vain woman is fascinated before the mirror, enchanted with herself. The rich miser is fascinated by the money and property. The honest worker is fascinated in the factory by hard work. Parents are fascinated by their children. All human beings are fascinated and sleep profoundly. When we are driving a car we are surprised on seeing people rushing through the streets and avenues without paying attention to the danger of the cars. Others frankly hurl themselves under the wheels of cars. Poor people... they are asleep...they seem like sleepwalkers, they walk along sleeping, endangering their very lives. Any clairvoyant can see their dreams. People are dreaming about everything that fascinates them.
During sleep, the EGO escapes from the physical body. This departure of the EGO is neccessary so that the vital body can repair the physical body. In the internal worlds the EGO is dreaming. In reality, we can be sure that the EGO takes it's dreams to the internal worlds. In the internal worlds the EGO is involved with the same things that it is fascinated by in the physical. Thus we see the carpenter in his workshop while sleeping, the policeman taking care of the streets, the hairdresser at the hairdresser shop, the blacksmith at his forge, the drunk at the tavern or bar, the prostitute in the house of her pleasures surrendered to lust, etc. All these people live in the internal worlds as if they were in the physical world. It does not occur to any living being to wonder if they are in the physical world or in the astral. Those who have asked themselves this question have awakened in the internal worlds, and thus have been able to study with amazement all the marvels of the HIGHER WORLDS. Just by getting used to asking ourselves this question from moment to moment during the day, during the so called state of vigil, we can eventually come to ask ourselves this same question in the higher worlds during our sleep. Clearly during sleep, we repeat all that we have done during the day; if during the day we become accustomed to asking ourselves this question, during our sleep, while outside our physical body, we will be repeating the same question to ourselves. The result will be the awakening of consciousness
After death people see everything just as in the physical world, and for that reason do not even suspect that they might find themselves outside the physical body. No one who is dead will ever believe that he has died, he is fascinated and sleeps profoundly. If during life the dead had practised remembering themselves from moment to moment, if they had struggled against fascination with things of the world, the result would be the awakening of consciousness. Then THEY WOULD NOT BE DREAMING, THEY WOULD WALK ALONG IN THE INTERNAL WORLDS WITH THEIR CONSCIOUSNESS AWAKE. Whoever awakens consciousness can study during sleep all the marvels of the higher worlds. Whoever awakens consciousness becomes clairvoyant. Whoever awakens consciousness lives in the Higher Worlds as a citizen of the Cosmos totally awake.
Anyone who awakens consciousness can no longer dream here on the physical plane, or in the internal worlds. Whoever awakens consciousness stops dreaming.

Re: What is ego?
This also inspired me and i would like to share it with all of you.
The human head is a castle with two chambers. The brain is the chamber of what is so common called the subconscious of vigil, and the Cerebellum is the chanber of the SUBCONSCIOUS. All the experiences that the EGO acquires in the higher worlds are stored in the Chamber of the Subconscious. When the two chambers unite, the result is enlightenment. With the retrospective exercisewe are able to unite these two chambers. If the student does not remember anything, he must struggle and struggle tirelessly to open the passage to the regions of the subconscious. No effort is lost. As the miner struggles to open the passage into the rocks of the earth, so must the student struggle to open a passage into the hard rock of matter toward the wonderful mansion of the subconscious. Every exercise generates a force that little by little breaks the hard rock of forgetfulness that separates us from the chamber of the subconscious where, like delicate jewels, the memoirs of the higher worlds are found. This exercise, together with the practice of REMEMBERING ONESELF, complement each other, leading us to complete and total enlightenment.

Re: What is ego?
Thank you Spirit-Being and Wind Dancer. This is an excellent source of information, the kind that will require deep thinking. I will contemplate on that. I believe that is what Jesus was talking about in his parables about the new wine skin and the clean cup as a requirement of being born again and become as a little child. So far I understand that the Higher Self must replace lover self (ego) in order to lead us where we are supposed to go.
This is very important subject to me, so I would like to continue this conversation by posting some thoughts on the information you provided from time to time, if you don’t mind.

Re: What is ego?
Luda please feel free to post anything you feel that needs to be posted your input is valued greatly as all of us will gain insights into each others posts, i must say without feeding the ego, that when you started this post when in your post you mentioned this.
I have been evaluating many of my beliefs from early on in my childhood, when i did not have a choice in the matter. It is helping greatly and i thank you so much for sharing this post on Egos. We can all gain a great deal of understanding about ourselves and who we are through inner discovery. I feel that we will all gain alot of great information about egos when we begin to share what we feel about them is true. I hope i did not come off as taking over the post, i just felt the need to share what i read about Ego. I hope others will begin to post some good information about this subject as well.

Re: What is ego?
I do like these explainations about ego since
i wonder if it's answering me when I ask questions
of the divine and my spirit guide....
some are well put and some are confusing
like an elaborate effort to fill a page that is
more important to the individual writing it
that to the rest of the world...LOL
ego is a very personal journey
and it can take a lifetime to understand it
I struggled with it's true meaning for many years...
could be half my life.

Re: What is ego?
There so many things that happen doing the day waiting for us to respond to them. And we do, to some of them and some of them we completely ignore and/or put it off.
I am going to try to live my day aware of my surroundings, every event and opportunity that comes to me throughout the day and try to respond to them appropriately. I will try to ignore my ego’s excuses based on fear and false beliefs and participate in the adventure we called “life”.

I am going to try to live my day aware of my surroundings, every event and opportunity that comes to me throughout the day and try to respond to them appropriately. I will try to ignore my ego’s excuses based on fear and false beliefs and participate in the adventure we called “life”
Well said luda i feel awareness is a big part of our journey in living a full and Awakened Life :sf:

I feel you were right on when you said it could take a lifetime to understand it.
I have just begun the personal journey of knowing and understanding the ego, i do feel there is something to this and it may one day bring the change that is needed in my life.

This video was amazing, after watching this video i actually did feel the coiled tension and i began observing it and it really did seem to lessen. I shall continue to practice this when i feel one of the egos surfacing, it will take a deep look, observation, and awareness to continue the practice. As i can be very forgetful with practices like these. I do hope to one day understand what the ego is and how it affects me. SELF DISCOVERY

Re: What is ego?
Unfortunately, our emotional life is exclusively based on “self-sympathy.”
To top off so much infamy, we only sympathize with ourselves, with our much “beloved
ego.” Moreover, we feel antipathy and even hatred towards those who do not sympathize
with us.
We love ourselves too much. We are one hundred percent narcissists; this is irrefutable,
indisputable.
As long as we continue bottled up in “self-sympathy,” any development of the Being
becomes something more than impossible.
We need to learn to see others” points of view. It is urgent to know how to place
ourselves in the place of others.
“Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to
them.” MATTHEW 7: 12
What truly counts in these studies is the manner in which human beings behave internally
and invisibly with one another.
Unfortunately and even if we were very courteous and even sincere at times, there is no
doubt that invisibly and internally we treat each other very badly.
People who are apparently very generous drag their fellow men daily into the secret caves
of themselves to do with them whatever they please (abuse, mockery, contempt, etc.).

Re: What is ego?
Great video Wind-Dancer! Questioning our motivations and being honest with ourselves helps one to know if he/she is dominated by ego or higher self. :tel: Thank you for sharing

Another perspective of Ego...
I fully respect your point of view...
I feel that Ego is all the actions and emotions that we have which are away from Love, any attitude or emotion that is not within Love is an Ego, and it is a living energy that lives with us until we allow it to, we can disolve it with love, compasion and tolerance, those 3 are key to be a better person, I could write a whole page from this, but I think this quite sums it up, if you would like to dig deeper in these kind of topics, I read this in the wonderful book "Wisdom of the Heart" by Flora Rocha, her unique way of showing you a whole new perspective of issues like Ego, Inner Being, Masters, Ancient Civilizations, Four Elements and the connection between all of them is just AMAZING!!! I highly recommend for you to take it into consideration to experience a new option...
Sincerely,
Max...

This is a great way to lessen the Ego, from what i understand there is always a counter like Vices & Virtues Vices would be the negative and Virtues positive. To be more loving, compassionate, tolerance i do feel you summed it up very well.

Re: What is ego?
23luda23 wrote:I read a lot of information on ego and it’s all different.
Beautifully said Luda! I think it is just as important for people to understand the usefulness that the ego is just in the same we view the usefulness of our bodies and minds.
We are not our egos nor our bodies or our minds but while we are here, we use these instruments, hopefully in an enlightened way to coexist in this world and to enjoy it.
We can have a healthy body and a healthy mind and a healthy ego.
Peace and Blessings,

I totaly agree :,,,,/:I always believed that everything that we have is for a reason and that we must have it in order to help us on our journey thru life. Its all depends on how we use it. Hammer is a useful tool and there is no way one can do without it if they are building something but it also can be used to demolish or destroy something or even can be used as a weapon.

Re: What is ego?
Lao Tzu, was a mystic philosopher of ancient China who wrote the Tao te ching. In one of his chapters he says; like the Tao, the uncarved block is formless yet has within it the potential for all forms, and once the block is carved, their will be names. Referring to the ego, we our selves are like an uncarved block, and as we mature from adolescents to adulthood, and we take many forms, because of our environments, and influences.
In society, it's the ego that defines who we are, and for many of us, especially those who are young, and learning to become mature adults we change with the trends of what society defines as proper, or right.
All of our thoughts become seeds that are planted in our subconscious mind, and in time if we keep watering our psych with the same thoughts we manifest our reality according to our thinking patterns. We attract the good and bad that we experience, and witness in our everyday lives through the law of attraction.
Self discovery is an interesting topic Spirit-Being, because when we apply it to the ego, I find that people can sometimes be superficial, and lost by living up to anothers expectations, and by doing this, I see how people are really making them selves unhappy. They become the ego's that they think society wants them to be in order to feel excepted, and I feel that when people do this, they loose allot of faith in them selves, and are unable to find their true self their, spiritual identity.
Self discovery in a spiritual light though, is something that can really be interesting, and personal, because it allows you to really discover who you really are, and what direction you are heading in.

Re: What is ego?
thank you PS and SB
it's been confusing
and I like what you have
said about Ego....
the definition needs to be lengthy
but not over the top and I really
know about the labels that can
either make you walk proud
or slump as if you don't exist....
Family is so important and they
don't even have to be blood
related as long as they are family...
LOVE
