The Yoga Experience

Benefits of Yoga Yoga-3

Many people are surprised to discover that yoga can be one of the most physically challenging forms of exercise they have ever done. It can also be one of the most relaxing and restorative experiences. The beauty of yoga is its versatility. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you perceive your limitations to be - everyone can practice yoga.
By addressing both physical and mental imbalances in the body, yoga can be a life balancing tool. And in our culture, life balance is something that we often struggle to achieve. Yoga can help to unify the body and mind and release tension and negative energy from both. In fact, the word yoga means “union” - through yoga a union develops between body and mind through breath and movement.

On the physical level, yoga can be a cardiovascular, strength and flexibility workout all in one. Flexibility is a cornerstone of a yoga practice; it helps realign the body and make it more supple and comfortable as we age. But yoga is much more than just a good stretch. It requires plenty of strength – you will use muscles you never knew you had! But perhaps more than anything else, yoga will help you to get reacquainted with something we typically take for granted – breathing. Our breath is basically our life force. But our fast-paced lives can leave us feeling breathless. No wonder it is calming and grounding to spend some time focusing on the breath.

I would love to learn how to do yoga and I just found out the public library has lots of DVD's available unfortunately too many to choose from. Can anyone recommend particular DVD? Your help will be very much appreciated. Thank you. :lovesigh:

I must say i have not practiced yoga, but there are many forms of yoga that are very helpful, if i may i will add some interesting yoga practices here, maybe it will hep you to be able to decide which would be right for you. Some of these forms of yoga are mainly from the east but have migrated here to the west, to me yoga is inner and an outer balance. You could try anyone of these forms or try many of the yoga practices that we have come to know here in the west.

Yoga is not only stretches and breathing, some yoga is a deep inner transformation that comes with meditation. And there is the yoga that we have all come to know here in the west where we do stretches and it is called yoga. If you are limited and cannot do the stretches then there are many other different forms of yoga you can practice through deep meditation. We are not limited only by our thinking.

Many Blessings

Benefits of Yoga Empty Re: Benefits of Yoga

Post by Manchester June 21st 2011, 11:04 am

Yoga is great. I've been doing it for several years now. The way it maniputes your muscles is incredible. Most of the time I end the class feeling how I feel after a massage. I've never been really flexible like you see many of yoginis. They can be intimidating. But I didn't allow it to bother me. I went on a sort of fruitarian diet for about 3 weeks and I was amazed at how flexible I got towards the end. (Not recommending the fruitarian diet to anyone. don't want to hear the "are you nuts" Smile ) Anyway, I'm starting to think that there may be a correlation between fruits and flexibility.

I'm trying to teach my mom yoga but it doesn't seem to be working. Guess I gonna have to leave it to a professional. From watching her situation, I will advise everyone, it is better to begin yoga today, not tomorrow. Many people like my mom keep telling themselves, I'll do it when I have more money, more time, more... And years pass. The body ages. Back when my mom first wanted to do it, her body was younger, more flexible but she always had an excuse to wait for the perfect time. And now, several years later, the simplest of moves like sitting on her heels causes her pain. And I totally understand. I can only imagine myself at her age.

Anyway, the moral of the story is: if you want to do something, do it today, don't wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow will bring its own issues that you can't predict today.

Also, if you have good internet access and a good computer, better yet if your tv is hooked up to the net, you can follow yoga classes on-line at YouTube.com. Type in "Full Yoga Classes" in their search engine and you'll find yoga classes for all levels and in different styles like Kundalini, Hatha, Morning, Relax, Power, Anusara... The great thing about it is: sometimes, the library doesn't have the style of yoga you are looking for and you don't want to pay for it yet without knowing it you're going to like it. So, youtube comes in as your next best bet.

Make sure you click on the full yoga classes, the ones that are 30mins to hour+ long. Some of the yoga teachers have added demos of their full rountine and you don't want to start something that ends 5 minutes later.

Well, that's my 2cents. Hope it helps.
