Hi from the Pacific Northwest

Post by bhagavandas on March 10th 2013, 11:44 am

Hi Everyone,
A friend in England suggested this site to me.
It looks like an interesting site! I'll have to be careful, as I could clearly spend the whole day reading and posting!

Hi Bhagavandas.Welcome to the forum.
Perhaps one day you can tell your story of
how you came to Bhakti Yoga and Jesus.
Why am I personally interested ?
I have practised for many years Sant Mat which
is also Bhakti Yoga but based on a guru figure as its master.
Thanks
Stephen

Hi Stephen, I was involved with ISKCON for many years. I left and became invovled in Spiritualism and the Anglican Church. I've learned that the basic concepts of Christianity and Spiritism (especially Spiritism) are very similar to Bhakti. I've recently gotten invovled in ISKCON again.
Within ISKCON there is a controversy over the parapara (line of gurus) since the death of ISKCON's founder, A.C. Bhaktivenada Swami Prabhupad. Some say that the ISKCON gurus are bogus, and that Swami Prabhupad intended for initiations to be done by 'ritvik' after he passed.
I've always been pressured to take initiation, but have personally never felt the urge to be initiated.
Recently I spent over a month in the wilderness on an isolated farm in Oregon. No internet, no cable television.... just 3 of us working on this farm. It was isoalted, monotonous, but very beneficial spiritually. I took long walks every morning and every evening, praying and doing japa, and read the BHAGAVADGITA AS IT IS every evening. Cooked vegetarian food for the others, went to be early, adn rose up early.
Before we went down there, I'd told some friends that I was going to start a BARNASHRAMA (a play on words for VARNASHRAMA.) I prayed, and asked GOD (KRSNA) to show me who my spiritual master was to be. I took a poster of KRSNA and was going to put the picture up in the barn, and meditate on it (doing japa) daily. But, when I got to the barn uipon our arrival, I discoverd a large picture of Jesus Christ up in the barn.
I got to thinking: baptism is just like RITVIK initiation in the Vaishnava tradition. I'd once taken a vow to follow Jesus. And, Swami Prabhupad taught that Jesus was our guru. He clearly taught that Jesus was a Vaishnava, and that one can follow Jesus and be a devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead (KRSNA).
So, I believe that the teachings of ISKCON and the teachings of Jesus are the same. Christ was (is) a Spiritual Master, and one can have him as guru.
I don't have a lot of time this afternoon, but if you would like, I could put Swami Prabhupad's quotes on Jesus on a thread.
I have to run to Portland for the evening.
Thanks for the interest.
Mike ... aka Bhagavanda... aka sprite....

Dear Mike,
Thank you for your post. Now I have a better understanding
where you are coming from.
I find your combination of Bhakti Yoga and
Christ very logical and practical.
I wish you success and happiness in your path.

Hi Mike, welcome to this site.
Please forgive me for not knowing anything about your beliefs.
I'm sure I will be delightfully educated and look forward to reading more.

Tell us about yourself : Iím a widow; I lost my spouse April 16, 1999 to a broken heart and Cancer. He was a Native American. I have lived on his Reservation in California for 37 years. We were married 23 years. We had two children, lost one to a drunk driver in 97 before my spouse died. I started my spiritual journey when son passed; but woke up to spirituality abruptly June 2009 when I had an event reading by James Van Praagh and he brought through eight deceased relatives. I would love to be a medium in the future, and share that spiritual connection with those who have lost. I take photos of spirits in clouds. One of my favorite spirit photographs at night is an apparition of a Native American Male.
