Different Types of Yoga

Post by Manchester on June 21st 2011, 11:34 am

I thought I should add a thread on the different types of yoga that exists. There's quite alot, especially in the West when new routines seem to be given a named and marketed as a yoga style. And I got no problem with that, it just means more for me to try. :-)

Anyway, here's a list...
(sorry if I butcher some of the names)

This group is used mostly for a body workout:
Power
Hot
Anusara
Kundalini
Gentle
Relax
TriYoga
Hatha
Iyengar
Restorative
Sivananda
Svaroopa
Ashtanga
Viniyoga
Ananda
Bikram
Body-Mind Centering Yoga
Chair Yoga
Integral
ISHTA
Jivamukti
Kripalu
Natural
Partner
Tantra
Naked

This group is used mostly for a mind workout and spiritual advancement:
Karma
Bhakti
Jnana
Mantra
Kriya
Kundalini

For more information on the less known yoga styles that focus on spiritual advancement, check out this link. I didn't know all this until i happened upon her website several months ago. She gives explanations too. http://violetadebocage.com/attachments/File/Spiritual_Articles/Yoga_and_Spiritual_Living.htm

Tell us about yourself : i'm on a mission to ascend, not religiously but spiritually. i want my body to be fuller of light, my mind to be open to all wisdom of this earth and beyond, and my soul to travel up dimensions to bring me enlightened knowledge.
